FAQs
What is clinical research?
Every treatment offered by your doctor has been tested to ensure it is safe and effective. This testing is called clinical research. From small improvements to existing medications, to new life-saving therapies, clinical research is an important part of making new medicines, treatments, and options for preventative care available for everyone.
Why participate in a clinical research study?
A clinical research study evaluates new ways to prevent, detect, or treat disease. Every treatment used today went through a rigorous clinical research process to prove that it’s safe and effective. By participating in a clinical study, you help with the advancement and availability of new treatments.
- Reimbursement of travel costs
- Positively impact the future of medicine for future patients
Benefits of participation may include:
What if I participate in the screening, and then decide I'm no longer interested in being considered for a study?
You may withdraw your consent to participate, ask for a copy of your records and/or for us to permanently delete your records at any time for any reason.
Why isn’t Lp(a) a part of routine testing?
Currently, Lp(a) testing is not available for routine risk screening in Nova Scotia despite being linked to up to 3x heart attack risk. Speak with our team to find out if this health screening is right for you.
Are there any current treatments for Lp(a)?
Currently, there are no approved Lp(a) treatments on the market. Participants may have access to learn about research options for the development of Lp(a) treatments and help advance new treatment options for cardiovascular health as a study volunteer!
What information and tests do you gather?
We will gather some of your health history, contact information and a blood test to confirm your Lp(a) levels.
How will I know if I'm eligible now or in the future for any trials?
A member of the Care Access team will reach out to you as trials become available to discuss your eligibility and the process to participate.
Can I share my results with my family doctor?
While this is screening and not an official diagnostic test, you will be provided a copy of your results. We encourage you to review this with our study team for eligibility for any trials and with your doctor.
